Tis the season for graduation parties!

With college graduations quickly approaching (and high school not far behind), your mailboxes are about to be flooded with graduation party invites. When I graduated, it seemed like I attended a party every night for the entire week before graduation and it is tough coming up with cute gift ideas for everyone! But to help take a little stress out of the search for the perfect grad gift, I’ve compiled a list of my favorites! So instead of rushing around town searching for gifts the day of the party, you can spend that extra time getting ready for fun nights out with your best friends.

for girls

1. Monogrammed Beach Bag

A beach trip after graduation is the perfect way to celebrate so give one of your girls a cute bag that will last them through years of beach trips. She will get tons of use out of it and she’ll love the personalized touch! This bag can be found at marleylilly.com for $29.99!

2. Photo Collage

If you’re crafty, a fun graduation gift would be to use that talent to make your friend a photo collage of some of your favorite memories. All you’d need is photos, tape, a frame, and a little creativity and you’re friend would love your gift! I love this thoughtful idea!
(And don’t worry, if you’re not feeling creative, you can always use an online company to create the perfect collage. I have used shutterfly numerous times and my orders always turn out great!)

3. Grab Bag

If you’re going to a lot of parties, graduation gifts can add up and it can get expensive! So splurge on your besties, but consider making fun gift bags for your other friends. You can throw in their favorite snack, a handwritten card, stationery (Image 3 is a super cute option from the Etsy shop Homecoming Designs), nail polish (Image 4 from Essie), and other little goodies and you’ve created a perfect little gift!

4. Friend Date

A friend of mine one time gave me a gift bag with a card inside that said she would take me on a girl’s day to my favorite restaurant, bookstore, boutique, and coffee shop. We got to do some of my favorite things, spend the day together, and she treated me to lunch and let me pick out my own gift along the way. Such a creative idea and we had a great time hanging out! When in doubt, this is a great gift option and image 5 can help you with the wording!

So now that we’ve got the ladies covered, don’t forget about the men in your life.

guys gifts

1. Collegiate Apparel

Guys love t-shirts so grab the guy in your life a shirt for the school he is either planning to go to or is graduating from. He will love it because he loves his school and he will wear it with pride (and think of you).

2. Gift Card + Note

Whether he is your best guy friend, boyfriend, or crush, all guys love gift cards. Get him a gift card to his favorite ice cream shop or a sporting goods store and he will be thrilled! Guys love the simple things in life so he will appreciate that you know his favorite things and he will appreciate the sweet note you add too! Throw in a hint about getting the ice cream together and he might just move from crush to boyfriend before the summer is over. You’re welcome, ladies.

Gift giving is one of my favorite things in the world and I always try to give gifts that will be meaningful to the recipient. There is nothing I love more than giving someone the perfect gift they never knew they wanted and seeing their eyes light up when they open it. I love making people feel special and loved and hope that you guys can take these ideas and adapt them to make the people in your life feel loved as they celebrate a milestone in life! Graduation can be stressful, but it is so fun and it is the perfect time to spread a little love to the graduates in your life.

What will you be gifting this graduation season?

Happy Easter!

Easter is here, baskets are filled, eggs are hidden, pastels are everywhere, and Jesus is Risen!

I’ve had a wonderful day with my family celebrating the resurrection and enjoying each other’s company! We ate, had an adult Easter egg hunt (I won $6!) and our annual egg toss!

[Side note: my boyfriend and I won this year! Whoooop!]

I love Easter for so many many reasons and one of those reasons is this: the fashion.

Everyone had the cutest instagrams today with sundresses, bow ties, and Jack Rogers all over the place. So I decided I would share what I wore…

For Easter this year, I got Lilly Pulitzer’s Janice Knit Shift Dress. So comfortable, but so cute. I’m officially obsessed with this dress. It was the perfect dress for this sunny day and I loved it in all my family photos. The color is so vibrant and let’s be honest, Lilly is the queen of spring and summer fashion. It’s definitely going to be something I wear for years to come!

So what did you guys wear for Easter? And what goodies did you get in your baskets?

Let me know 🙂 Hope everyone had a great holiday!

The Liebster Award

liebster-award Thank you to both emilyannlou and Muriel Makes Magic for nominating me for the Liebster Award. This award, from what I understand, is a kind way of acknowledging the blogs that you enjoy reading and to let readers learn a little bit more about you as a blogger at the same time. So thank you for your kindness because it means the world to me to know that my blog is not just for me, but that other people enjoy it too!

The Rules for the Liebster Award:

1. Link the person who nominated you to your blog post. Thank then and let them know you answered the questions.

2. Answer the questions given to you by the nominator.

3. Nominate 5-11 other bloggers with a following of less than 500.

4. Create questions for your nominees to answer.

5. Let the nominees know that they have been nominated by going to their blog and notifying them.

6. Display the award on your blog—by including it in your post and/or displaying it using a widget or a gadget

Since emilyannlou nominated me first, I’ll start with the questions she gave me.

1. What job did you want to do ‘when you grow up’?

Oh my, I wanted to be everything from a teacher to an interior designer to an oceanographer to a physical therapist.

2. What is your favourite quality in a personality?

Kindness. A kind person is someone who makes other people feel appreciated, they are loyal and respectful and everything I love in a person. Kind people are my favorite.

3. What motivates you to keep blogging?

Sweet comments from readers and the fun that I have doing it. Even if I was the only person who read my blog, it would still be worth it to me because of how much I enjoy doing it.

4. Three good things about yourself?

Well… I feel like I have a perception of me and others may have a different perception so I asked my boyfriend and his first three responses were that I’m loyal, level-headed, and passionate about everything I do. So there we have it.

5. And now one bad? (Because we have to acknowledge the bad too.)

I would say that a bad thing about me is that I’m a perfectionist. I expect perfection from myself and from others sometimes. I tend to be really hard on myself.

6. Dinner date with three people, any three people, who would you choose? Just not Rupert Grint because he’s at mine.

I’m honestly not sure… I would probably just choose my family, but that isn’t interesting for readers so I’ll choose Blair Waldorf, Chuck Bass, and Serena Van der Woodsen because GG is the best and fictional characters are more fun than real celebrities.

7. Something you’ve discovered about yourself through blogging?

I just recently started blogging, but I think that through blogging I’ve realized that I like projects. I like to be busy with fun things aside from just working and school prep stuff so it is nice to have something to do that I really enjoy. I love completing projects and being creative so it is the project that always requires creativity and never ends.

8. Most important thing in your life at the moment?

My family and boyfriend are the most important things in my life. God put the best people in my life and I treasure them all.

9. What is the craziest thing you’ve done?

I don’t really do anything crazy, but I love adventures. The main thing that comes to mind is spending a week in Guatemala building houses and working with kids in villages. It was an incredible trip that was completely different than anything else I’d ever done. It was a lot of work, but it was so worth it.

10. Do you do your chores? (Asked by my boyfriend, as I’m writing this rather than doing the washing up.)

Yes! I love having a clean house and I love to feel accomplished. I do laundry and dishes constantly.

So that is it for that set of questions so now I’ll answer the questions from Muriel Makes Magic.

1. What is the inspiration for your blog title?

I named my blog Palmettos & Pearls for several reasons. Palmettos are the state tree in South Carolina so that is my nod to where I grew up. Pearls are classy and timeless, two things that I aim to be. Pearls are also special to me because throughout our relationship, my boyfriend has given me a pearl bracelet and pearl earrings that I love. So pearls are special to me for sentimental reasons and because of their elegance in fashion.

2. What is your favorite season?

I love autumn! I love when it starts to get cooler in the mornings and the leaves begin to change colors. Bonfires, pumpkins, and crunchy leaves are just a few of the thousands of reasons why fall is my favorite season.

3. Who is your favorite blogger to check out?

I don’t know that I really have a favorite yet on wordpress. I started watching Elle and Blair Fowler’s videos and keeping up with their blogs a long time ago, but I really just started wordpress and started following people whose interests seemed similar to mine. I’ve since started to read a lot of different blogs, but I don’t think I can choose a favorite.

4. Where is your favorite place that you have ever visited?

This is tough. I’ve traveled a lot throughout the United States and I’ve ventured out to Guatemala and France before too. To pick a favorite is tough, but I’ll probably say Paris because my mom and I went together, it was a Christmas present surprise trip, and it was my first time out of the country. It was magical and perfect and I wouldn’t trade that time for anything

5. If your house was on fire, what are three items you would grab on your way out the door?

I’m assuming that my family made it out safely so if that is the case, I would grab my cats, photo albums, and external hard drive because it has tons of pictures on it. That is a really tough question to answer and I just pray I am never in that situation.

6. What is your favorite quote?

“Live, travel, adventure, bless, and don’t be sorry” by Jack Kerouac is the first quote that came to mind. I love quotes and may or may not have a whole Pinterest board devoted to them, but this one is a really great one.

7. What song is currently on repeat for you right now?

I love “Style” by Taylor Swift. It is super catchy and fun so I’ll pick that for my song of choice right now!

So now here are five blogs that I enjoy reading and that I’d like to acknowledge for this award:

And my questions for all of you are:

1. What inspired you to start your blog?

2. What is the one item in your closet that you couldn’t live without?

3. If you could be on any reality show, which one would you choose? Why?

4. If you could travel to any place in the world, where would you choose to go?

5. If you won the lottery, what would you do?

6. What influences your style the most?

7. If you could host any theme party, what theme would you choose?

Again, thanks so much to Emily and Muriel for sending a little love my way 🙂  And thanks to all my readers for making blogging even more fun. I hope everyone has a great weekend! blog signature

Exploring Pittsburgh

Known as both The City of Bridges and The Steel City.
The home of “Yinzers”, the Steelers, the Pirates, and the Penguins.

Pittsburgh is where my boyfriend and I ventured to yesterday and it was there that we spent the day among skyscrapers, colorful bridges, and beautiful architecture.

Our day in the city began by heading to the University of Pittsburgh. While there, we got to see the Cathedral of Learning as well as other buildings on campus. Within a few minutes of being there, I realized that the architecture in the city is really incredible. And on an unrelated note, the Pitt basketball team is super tall. We had to wait on them at a crosswalk and my gosh, those boys were huge. They smiled and waved which was nice so I may have to pull for them if they make the tournament next year!

After leaving there, we went to the Station Square. It was there that I first got a good look at the skyline. The Station Square was a nice area with restaurants and shopping opportunities inside the old train station. It was nice, clean, and had Michael Jackson songs playing through a speaker system. Nice touch, Pittsburgh.

To get a better look at the city we drove to the Duquesne Incline. Created in 1977, this incline uses its original wooden cable cars to take people up to a station with an overlook area. From there, we were able to look out over the city and see PNC Park and Heinz Field as well as the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers. The view was really impressive and we were able to ride the historic incline, see the city from the air, and ride back down all for $5 a piece. It was well worth it so if you’re ever in Pittsburgh, I would definitely recommend riding the incline and overlooking the city.

Here are some of the pictures we took at the top! For a fun day in the city, I decided to wear my Mandala Print Palazzo pants with a simple black top. These pants are probably my new favorites because they are so comfortable and have the cutest little bow on the waist. And even if I am in the north right now, I’m a southern girl at heart which means I automatically love fun prints, textures, and bows.

After leaving the incline, we headed back to our cars and decided it’d be best to head out of the city before we got caught in rush hour traffic. We drove through the city a little more to make sure we saw all the beauty it had to offer before we had to leave.

We got ice cream to enjoy on the ride home and then enjoyed some heavenly fried foods from Sheetz as we made our way to Johnstown, a city that is built similarly to Pittsburgh. Johnstown has bridges and inclines of its own, but unlike Pittsburgh, this city features a solemn history of three major floods that killed thousands of people. My boyfriend loves history and filled me in on all of this information while showing me around the area before we headed back to his hometown.

Our trip to Pittsburgh was a lot of fun and we enjoyed spending the day together exploring the city. Had we had more time, I would’ve loved to spend more time seeing the zoo and eating some local food, but I am thankful for the time we got to spend there. One thing I love in life is exploring new places whether it be a city, country, mountain, beach, or village. Traveling is one of my favorite things in life and I love fun little day trips so much. Each time we come to Pennsylvania, we go somewhere I’ve never been before and I get to see and experience a little bit more about the state my boy calls home. And for that, I am thankful.

Have any of you ever been to Pittsburgh? Let me know of any places in Pennsylvania you recommend that we visit!

Have a happy Thursday,

This or That {Tag}

Happy St. Patty’s Day everyone! St. Patrick’s Day is a happy holiday to celebrate for three reasons:

  1. you get to dress up
  2. it isn’t stressful
  3. you get to pinch people

So because it is a fun holiday, it seems only fitting that I do a fun post, right? And since everyone loves tag posts (or at least I do), I decided on the This or That tag for today!

blush or bronzer: Definitely blush for me. I rarely wear bronzer..

lip gloss or lipstick: Lipstick. I don’t like gloss because my hair gets stuck in it.

eye liner or mascara: I love eyeliner. Even though I always wear mascara too, I’m a big fan of eyeliner.

foundation or concealer: Foundation, I don’t use a concealer.

neutral or color eye shadow: Neutrals! Urban Decay’s Naked for me, please!

pressed or loose eye shadows: Pressed, loose anything makes a mess and I’m too OCD for that.

brushes or sponges: I use both, but probably brushes because you can be more precise.

OPI or china glaze: China Glaze is usually my choice, but I like both.

Long or short: Short, I don’t like having my nails too long.

Acrylic or natural: I rarely do acrylic just because it gets expensive, but I do like how they look.. Natural for me though most of the time.

Brights or darks: Brights! I love coral in the summer, gold in the fall, and red in the winter.

Flower or no flower: No designs for me.

perfume or body splash: Victoria’s Secret Sexy Little Things body spray is my fragrance of choice. Perfumes are too strong and give me headaches.

lotion or body butter: I like lotion, I need to use it more often though.

body wash or soap: Body wash definitely! Soap is slippery and awkward to use.

lush or other bath company: There isn’t a lush in my city so I guess Bath and Body Works will have to do.

jeans or sweat pants: Jeans! I only wear sweat pants if it is super cold and I have to be outside.. Any other time, I’m in jeans or leggings.

long sleeve of short: Depends on the season. I love long sleeved t-shirts, but short sleeves for everything else.

dresses or skirts: Dresses are my favorite. Sun dresses are a southern staple.

stripes or plaid: I wear tons of plaid in the fall. Flannels are cute and cozy at the same time!

flip flops or sandals: Sandals definitely. I don’t think I even own a pair of flip flops.

scarves or hats: People who know me know that I wear a scarf almost every day. I’m 100% a scarf girl.

studs or dangly earrings: I wear pearl & diamond studs every day.

necklaces or bracelets: Bracelets. I feel naked without them, but necklaces take forever to put on so I usually don’t wear one.

heels or flats: Flats usually because I’m always on my feet, but heels are fun for special occasions.

cowboy boots or riding boots: I like riding boots because they go with everything, but cowboy boots are super cute with sundresses during football season.

jacket or hoodie: Jackets for going out, boyfriend’s hoodie for staying in.

forever 21 or charlotte russe: Forever 21 is my love language.

abercombie or Hollister: I don’t shop at either, but I’d pick Abercrombie over Hollister

saks 5th or nordstrom: Either! I’d pick Nordstrom if I had to.

curly or straight: My hair is wavy so curly is my preference.

bun or ponytail: Messy bun or curled ponytail. It is impossible to choose.

bobby pins or butterfly clips: Bobby pins are life savers some days! Butterfly clips had a special place in my heart in 1999 though.

hair spray or gel: Hair spray is a necessity.

long or short: I’ve had both, but I like long hair the best.

light or dark: I have darker hair, but I love both. Lighter in the summer, darker in the winter!

side sweep bangs or full bangs: I think side swept is easier to pull off, but I don’t have either.

up or down: If I have time to fix it then I wear it down, but if I’m rushing to get to work then I wear it up.

rain or shine: Shine! Sunny days are the best days.

summer or winter: Summer! I prefer sandcastles to snowmen.

fall or spring: Fall is my favorite of all the seasons! The perfect mix of holidays and cool air and warm days. So perfect.

chocolate or vanilla: This may be the toughest question so far… I’m going to have to pick chocolate though. I love dark chocolate more than most things in life.

east coast or west coast: East coast, I’ve never been to the west coast but would love to go one day.

So those are my choices for the This or That tag! I like tag posts because you get to know the blogger a little more and who doesn’t love getting to choose between chocolate and vanilla every once in a while!? And no tag is complete without tagging others so I tag everyone reading this to complete the This or That tag!

Have a happy St. Patty’s Day!

Traveling Adventures: the natural bridge

My morning began at 5:30 and shortly thereafter, my boyfriend and I began our spring break drive to Pennsylvania. About halfway through our trip, we decided to neglect our GPS, follow the road signs, and venture into the town of Natural Bridge, Virginia in search of the Natural Bridge. After asking Siri for directions, we soon learned that she clearly wanted to have us killed as she recommended we drive down a narrow road on the outskirts of town to “park the vehicle and walk to the destination.” We quickly found out that Siri was incorrect in her directions and that the actual Natural Bridge was still 10 minutes away by car. That would’ve been quite the walk. Thanks, Siri.

After getting back to the main road, we turned to Siri once more and she failed us yet again as she instructed us to literally drive up a narrow, unmarked mountain side and directed us to park at a nearby house. Strike two.

It was then that we asked for directions. Thankfully, we found someone who was willing to help us and we arrived moments later to begin our trek to see what a local billboard called “one of the seven natural wonders of the world.”

The quarter mile hike began with a slippery little staircase and we carefully walked down, stepped in every puddle, and immediately were happy with our decision to explore the area. A waterfall greeted us and we made our way down the path that was lined with unique trees and signs explaining the history of the area.

Let me just say, the Natural Bridge is incredible. My boyfriend’s love of history and my love of nature (and photo ops) made this the perfect little detour. We soon realized that the rock is dizzying to stand under because of its incredible size and we really are so tiny compared to this great big earth. Water droplets fell from the rock as we walked underneath, splashed on our faces, and we laughed as we walked hand in hand under this natural masterpiece.

Our trip may have taken a little longer because of the stop, but we were both so happy that we took the time to visit the Natural Bridge. I hope we’ll always be the couple that pulls off the interstate in search of little adventures like this one. It was really beautiful and, in my opinion, it is always appropriate to “stop to smell the roses.” I’ve learned that if you take the time to look, it is really easy to find beauty in places you’d never expect it to be. This country is filled with so much beauty and it is so worth it to add a little time to a trip in exchange for adding joy to your life.

Do any of you look for fun little detours when you travel? If so, comment below and let me know which places you think are worth visiting!

I hope you all have a lovely weekend,

Xo- k

Ps: Take another look at the last photo.. I’m the little orange dot. Crazy, right?!

{Kate Spade Inspired} Painting

Painting is one of the things that I find most therapeutic in life. I don’t get to paint as often as I would like, but when I do I really love it. Sometimes in the midst of the joy of approaching a blank canvas, I let myself get caught up in what I’m painting instead of just focusing on the act of painting. Instead of doing a still life piece or something that would require focus and precision, I decided to simply gather my painting supplies, go sit in my yard, and paint. I splattered and dripped and blended and just let the paint do what it wanted. And it was so much fun. I enjoyed the beautiful weather and took inspiration from famous words by Kate Spade: “Think, travel, celebrate, charm, decorate, dress, live colorfully.” Those two simple words “live colorfully” stuck with me and I decided that one way to live more colorfully would be to add a little color to my décor. I began with that as inspiration, white canvas in hand, and the rest just seemed to happen.

A day of painting is good for the soul and I encourage all of you to give it a try one day.
